Meet the Family
“The Mellin Family”
Grandad’s little butchers shop on the corner was where it all began. From J.R Mellin’s, Roaming Roosters grew, meet the family!
Geoff (Dad)
Quite a character, my father Geoff is, (as if he would let us forget) the source of all our knowledge! Entering the meat trade on leaving school at the tender age of 16, Geoff learnt his craft from his father and has since passed it on to us. A keen farmer Geoff began breeding livestock as a hobby and showing them for breeding purposes. He won many of these shows and his success in this area is from where our practices have evolved. The life and soul of J.R Mellin’s he inspired me and my brother nick to create Roaming Roosters.
Simon (Me!)
Although I worked in my father’s butchers shop as a young lad, on leaving school I opted for a career in the motor industry as a mechanic which by my late teens had branched into motorsport. It is in this industry where I learnt a lot about marketing, websites etc, but mainly the importance of good food and the lack of it! It’s not until you step away from something, you realise what it means to you!
So I have ventured back to my roots for a (perhaps not much) quieter life in farming and this knowledge has enabled me to push the concept behind Roaming Roosters. It’s in my blood and having mucked about on the farm since I was a child I now manage to do the same and make a living from spending time with my beloved pigs (whom my girlfriend is very jealous of!) My main role is to manage from the background but I do pop my head up now and again!
Nick (my younger but not smaller brother)
My younger brother Nick is a butcher born and bred, free range and nutritious but unfortunately he’s not for sale. Nick spent most of his childhood on the farm with my dad and exhibiting his prize cows. To this day Nick’s cattle are his pride and joy.
Following in the footsteps of Geoff he learnt butchery from a very young age and now at 22 is arguably one of the best in the business.
He may be as big as a bear and as strong as an ox but don’t be afraid because he has the biggest and most infectious grin in the butchering world which makes him a hit with most of our customers!
